Two railway police constables returned a bag containing Rs47, 500 to a student, who had left it behind in the first-class compartment of a Titwala-bound local train.
The boy, Deven Patel, is a third year engineering student at KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai, and a resident of Shahad.
In addition to the money, the bag also contained important documents related to his studies.
Patel said, “I don’t know how to thank the two police constables. If the bag would have gone in the wrong hands, it would have affected my studies as there were important papers in it.”
He added, “I boarded the first-class compartment of the train at Matunga. I remembered some important work and got off at the Dombivli station. I then realised that I had left the bag in the train. I immediately caught another train and went to the Kalyan station to check for my bag, but it wasn’t there.”
Rajesh Gaikwad, the police constable from the government railway police (GRP), Kalyan, said that he had boarded the train from the Ghatkopar station and was coming to Kalyan for his night shift.
“When our train passed Dombivli, there were very few passengers on it. My colleague, Asha Gaikwad and I, saw a leather bag on the luggage rack and asked fellow passengers if it belonged to them. When everyone denied owning it, I took the bag and opened it to find the books and cash. I gave it to the Kalyan railway police station, which contacted the owner.”
