The police have rounded up 54 couples so far on accusations of behaving indecently in public places, an agency reported.

"There's no restriction on visiting or sitting in the garden in a proper way but if someone is found sitting on someone's lap, we will take action," Additional police Commissioner Bhushan Upadhyaya said.

Officers will pay surprise visits two to three times a week to parks to ensure proper behavior by young couples, Upadhyaya said.

A similar campaign earlier this year in the northern city of Meerut led to protests after overzealous police beat up teenaged girls and shaved the heads of their suitors.
