The outset of police’s pressure tactics stems from the extensive denunciation by the Muslim clergy that has put the city police in front of the shariyat itself.
On Wednesday night, two constables, identifying themselves from Yashoda Nagar police post, went to residence of Anis Farooqi and gave this time a deadline of three days to produce his son Sharib Anis in the police station.

The cops informed him that his daughter-in-law had lodged a complaint against them and inquiry was on its basis. They asked Farooqi to appear before the ASP (Cantt) in person with his son at Cantt police station on Saturday. The cops left after taking signatures of Farooqi with an instruction not to miss the appearance.

However, the family members of the girl denied to have filed any other complaint, except the one that led to divorce at the police station. “Neither any family or the girl has extended any fresh complaint,” told girl’s maternal uncle, Wasim Ahmed when contacted.

The boy’s family, on the other, is scared by this development and apprehend this could be the beginning of their harassment. Needless to say, the talaq was engineered at the behest of a top police officer.

Meanwhile, the Shaher Qazi Maulana Manzoor Mazahari joined the chorus and declared any divorce under pressure is wrong and against the conviction of the shariyat.

“This a clear case of police challenging the shariyat and the district administration must initiate criminal proceedings against the police officers involved,” said Maulana Mazahari.

The Shaher Qazi said he would take up the matter with the authorities as the Muslim clerics across the city were concerned with the way police have started meddling with Muslim Personal Laws.
