A councillor of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) filed an election petition against the Haryana government on Tuesday. Ward No. 30 councillor Nisha Singh filed the petition after the government postponed the mayor's election for a week. It was supposed to be held on Tuesday.

A district court judge will decide the fate of the election on Wednesday.

“The government has disrespected the Constitution. Somebody should stand up against this attitude, or things will never change,” Singh said.

“My protest is meant to send a message to the government that people won’t take things lying down anymore, even if it involves crossing several hurdles to file a complaint,” Singh added.

The councillors are waiting for Justice Narender Kaur to pass the order on Wednesday for the mayor’s election. The judge has already sent a notice to the MCG commissioner, who in turn forwarded it to divisional commissioner TK Sharma.

The councillor faced a lot of difficulty in filing the election petition because the treasury department was unaware of the sections or codes under which it should accept the R250 security deposit.
