On Thursday night, Kanti Devi and Rukan Singh allegedly consumed poison at a police post in Ghaziabad and were later declared dead at a private hospital.

It was on May, 6 that the two had eloped from Jahamgirabad area of Bulandshahr district in Western UP and taken shelter at a relative’s place in Morta, Ghaziabad.

Kanti was married and had two children, while Singh was unmarried. Kanti’s husband Ravi Kumar had lodged an FIR at Bulandshahr after she had eloped.

On Thursday afternoon, Kumar had tracked down the couple and asked three constables from Vardhmanpuram police post to accompany him to nab the couple from Morta.

After the couple was brought to the police post on Thursday night, police officials claimed that they consumed poison.

Senior police officials said that a wrapper had been recovered from the woman’s inner-clothes during the Panchayatnama procedure, which was carried out in presence of a magistrate.

Three constables and the in-charge of Vardhmanpuram police post have been suspended for illegal detention leading to the couple’s death.

Senior police officials have ruled out any foul play on the police’s part and said that the post-mortem reports did not mention any injuries on the body of the victims. Officials said a family member could get an FIR lodged in the case.
