The Madurai bench of the high court issued the directive to the superintendent of police of Tirunelveli district during a hearing on Thursday. Justices S Nagamuthu and V S Ravi gave the direction in response to a habeas corpus petition filed by Mariammal, the mother of 15-year-old boy.

Mariammal’s counsel told the court that police had not registered a case so far under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Police had only registered a case about the “missing” boy when he did not return home on March 31 but had not taken any steps to trace him, the counsel said.

The counsel alleged the teacher had kidnapped the teenager and Mariammal feared her son’s life was in danger.

After the boy left his house, gold jewellery weighing 136 grams was found missing and Rs 10,000 was withdrawn from an ATM.
