An eastern Bangladeshi court on Tuesday sentenced three Islamic militants to death and five others to life in prison for bombings and a murder, a court official said.

District and Sessions Judge AK Roy handed down the sentences in a packed courtroom in Laxmipur district, 96 kms east of the capital, Dhaka, public prosecutor Monirul Islam Haowleder told reporters.

All the militants are the members of the outlawed Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh group, which is responsible for last year's a spate of bombings, mainly targeting at court and government offices, in a part of a violent campaign to establish strict Islamic laws in Muslim-majority nation.
