More than two years after the Tatas pulled out its Nano project from Singur in West Bengal, a senior CPI-M leader and former MP today requested Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata to bring back the project and said his party would see to it that no one derailed it anymore.
"It is the fervent wish of lakhs of people of Hooghly district that the project return to Singur. We are requesting Ratan Tata to consider bringing the project back there. The state government, police and administration would do whatever necessary," Anil Basu, the secretary of the CPI-M's farmers' wing in Hooghly district, told a huge rally here attended by people mostly from that area.
Basu said there was no force on earth which could prevent the project from taking shape again if the Tatas decided in its favour.
He made the request in the presence of state CPI-M leader Benoy Konar who is a Central Committee member of the party.
Interestingly, Basu's appeal came after Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had last month said that she would like to set up a coach factory at the place if land was made available.
The Tata Group, which took away their Nano project to Sanand in Gujarat after facing sustained agitation by Trinamool Congress, still holds the lease for the 997-acre project area.
