The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in Tripura on Thursday urged the Election Commission (EC) to probe the threat of the Congress party to "not allow the Left Front to form the government for a seventh term" after the coming assembly polls.
CPI-M Tripura state secretary Bijan Dhar, in a letter to the EC, said: "State Congress President Sudip Roy Barman, while addressing a rally here, recently threatened that under no circumstances would the Left Front be allowed to form the government for the seventh term."
"To ensure this, the Congress would take all measures that are required," the Congress party state chief was quoted as saying (in his speech) in CPI-M's letter, which was released to the media Thursday.
Dhar, also a CPI-M central committee member, in support of his claim sent a video recording and newspaper clippings of Barman's speech along with his letter to the poll panel.
The CPI-M leader said this type of threat could have been ignored but it was delivered by a state president of a national party which is a major political party in the country and an incumbent party at the centre.
"With the bitter experience of electoral malpractices and foul play carried out by the Congress in the past, we have reasons to be concerned," Dhar said.
