Hounded by a number of political murders the main opposition party in Kerala, CPM, is into palliative care in a big way. The party has floated pain-management and care centres in 14 districts of the state to help cancer patients and others and win back confidence of the masses.
Interestingly ‘51 stab wounds’ is the favorite slogan political opponents flaunt these days to embarrass the party. Marxist rebel TP Chandrasekharan, who was murdered in last May allegedly by CPM workers, received 51 stab wounds. Though the party has denied any role in TP murder 70-odd accused are active party workers.
“You are not alone. Our volunteers are there to give you medicine and care,” state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan told a 70-year-old destitute, who is fighting cancer, after inaugurating a palliative care centre in a Dalit colony in Thiruvananthapuram. The party has started training young workers in nursing and pain-management. And district committees have been asked to manage these volunteers. Each district will have at least six teams comprising dozen-odd workers.
After TP murder, former Idukki secretary MM Mani made a speech in which he admitted that the party had executed many political opponents. Moreover, the arrest of Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan in connection with a kangaroo court trial and execution of a young Muslim League activist, made the party feel that it is getting isolated.
