INDIAN JOURNALISM and journalists were at their lowest on credibility and if the media does not improve itself, who would be responsible to keep society in order? Senior journalist Arun Sadhu raised this issue while addressing students of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism here on Sunday.
Sadhu spoke on themes of ‘Code of conduct for journalists’ and ‘Prominent features of journalism in Mumbai’. He said policies in a democracy are framed on the basis of information available and media plays an important role in the entire process.
Media is, therefore, responsible for keeping policy makers abreast of realities at the grassroots and at the same time apprise people of activities of the Government.
“Farmers in Vidarbha are committing suicide and an able prime Minister like Dr Manmohan Singh seems to be helpless in doing anything about it,” he pointed out.
Describing media to be more responsible than executive and judiciary, he said media is definitely the fourth pillar of democracy. Media has as much responsibility towards society as executive and judiciary.
He said old newspapers being published for years have maintained their credibility. They are also aware of their responsibility towards the society. He said trust was the bedrock of relationship of newspapers with its readers and it must be maintained at all costs.
