Two persons, who claimed to be relatives of cricketer Gautam Gambhir, beat up a man in Karol Bagh late on Tuesday after their car brushed past each other in what appears to be yet another incident of road rage in the Capital.
Police said two constables at a nearby picket tried stopping the duo. They, however, threatened the constables and continued beating the man.
“Around 1am, on Pusa road, the Tata Sumo my husband was driving brushed past a Hyundai Accent car. The car’s occupants emerged and started beating him. One of the persons claimed to be Raghav Gambhir, a cousin of the cricketer. The other said he was Gautam’s uncle,” said Bhupinder, victim Jaspal Singh’s wife. Jaspal, a driver, works for a call centre.
One of the constables said the two men mercilessly beat up Singh, who just lay there in a pool of blood. “The men were shouting and saying, ‘How dare you hit our car?’ When we tried stopping them, they claimed to be relatives of Gautam Gambhir and that no one could even touch them,” the constable said.
While policemen were trying to disengage the duo and talk to victim, they managed to flee. “We took down the vehicle registration number and the accused have been identified. They will be arrested soon,” a senior police officer said. The constables rushed the victim to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw.

{{/usCountry}}“Jaspal was unconscious for over 24 hours. He recorded his statement on Thursday afternoon,” the officer added. A case under Sections 308 (attempt to culpable homicide), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered but no arrests have been made.
Confirming that one of the two men was a cousin of the cricketer, Deepak Gambhir, his father, said this was a minor incident that the media was trying to play up.
