If Gurgaon is home to nearly 250 Fortune 500 companies, it is also fast becoming a safe haven for criminals. Murder, rape, robbery, carjacking, cyber crime – name any illegal activity and somebody or the other would have experienced it.
Take for example carjacking. As more cars hit the roads — 60,000 per month — carjacking cases have also seen an upward swing. With 3,000 cases, 2012 saw an 11 percent rise in carjacking incidents over the year 2011 when 2,700 cases were reported.
The disturbing trend continues this year – 1,058 carjacking cases have already been reported in the first four months of 2013.
On an average, eight incidents of carjacking take place in the Millennium City every day, a fact that belies all claims of the police on the improved law and order situation in the city.
The scene is no better for heinous crimes such as murder and rape.
In 2011, 85 murders were reported while 2012 did slightly better with 80 cases. This year, 39 murders have been reported so far.
Kidnapping and abduction fare worse. Against 48 and 49 cases in 2011 and 2012, respectively, this year the figure has already touched 65 – a steep rise.

{{/usCountry}}Besides, with 25 attempts to murder, 29 rapes and 23 molestation cases so far, the year 2013 is staring at bleak future as far as the safety and security environment is concerned.
This is where Hindustan Times steps in. Starting this week, HT will focus on 10 most important safety issues that make Gurgaon stare at a law and order breakdown and, in partnership with Gurgaon Police, will try to find a way out of the mess.
For example, HT will identify dark and poorly lit stretches and follow up with the police and civic authorities to install street lights at such spots. Along with Gurgaon Police, HT will also map the city’s vulnerable areas where policing is low.
Gurgaon police commissioner Alok Mittal said, “HT’s initiative to engage with the police and not just criticise it will go a long way in attaining our common destination -- a peaceful and safe Gurgaon.”
