Thought ST Stephen’s was off limits for those who score anything less than 80 per cent? Not for those who try their luck for admission under the sports quota. Many students who could not secure very high marks in Class 12 are now banking on getting into some respectable DU college through the sports quota.
For sports quota candidates cut-offs are not a consideration and some of the colleges don’t even put a limit on the number of seats reserved for them.
While Hindu is in demand for cricket players, having produced the likes of Ajay Jadeja,Murli Karthik and Gautam Gambhir, Stephen’s, Miranda, IP College and LSR are sought after by shooting enthusiasts.
Stephen’s has produced aceshots like Jaspal Rana and recent Commonwealth gold winner Vivek Singh, not to mention Olympian Karni Singh. Stephen’s and IP College are also the sought after by swimmers.
There’s, however, usually a huge gap in the scores of general category students and sports candidates. Tanya Dutta, a resident of Patiala, has secured 68% marks, but she too is confident of making it to one of the top DU colleges.
Tanya is a national level rifle shooter and is applying at Miranda, LSR, JMC and Sri Venkateswara. At Miranda and Hindu things are slightly different.
While Miranda gives only 5% extra weightage to sports candidates, Hindu reserves 5% of seats for them.
“We invite national level selectors for the sports trials, so there is no question of riff-raff getting in,” said Sudhir Kapoor, convenor admissions, Hindu College.
