Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday was issued notice by the Supreme Court on Karnataka government's petition challenging the state high court's verdict. The Karnataka High Court had given a clean chit to Jayalalithaa and three others on May 11, clearing them of "all charges" in the 19-year-old disproportionate assets case.
The Bengaluru trial court had convicted Jayalalithaa for possessing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income and sentenced her to a four-year jail term and imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore.
After her acquittal by the Karnataka HC, Jayalalithaa made a thumping victory from RK Nagar constituency and was sworn in as the Tamil Nadu chief minister.
On Monday, an apex court bench headed by Justice PC Ghose also issued notice returnable in eight weeks on the petition by DMK leader K Anbazhagan and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, both challenging Karnataka High Court verdict acquitting Jayalalithaa.
