The Danish embassy in Jakarta will reopen on Monday after remaining shut for three weeks following angry protests over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, an Indonesian official said.

"We have been officially informed that the embassy will reopen on Monday," foreign ministry spokesman Desra Percaya said.

Percaya said that the government would step up security at the embassy, but did not provide further details.

He added that Danish diplomats and staff had returned to the country with their families.

The embassy had closed in February following a spate of protests by various Muslim groups against the publication of the cartoons.

The caricatures, which have infuriated devout Muslims, were first published in a Danish newspaper in September and have since been reprinted elsewhere, igniting furious demonstrations in the Islamic world.
