The police, however, denied any link between the incident and the protests against publishing of caricature of Prophet Mohammad in western dailies.

Following a heated exchange in a cafe in downtown Moscow, a Caucasian man took out a 'non-lethal' pistol and shot in the chest the Danish national sitting at the nearby table with his American and British friends on Sunday night, ITAR-TASS reported.

Police said the detained attacker, 25-year old Caucasian Muslim, a resident of Moscow, said that he acted in the "sudden fit of hatred".

"The Caucasian shot at random and by chance hit the Danish national injuring him," the agency quoted a police source as saying who denied to link the incident with protests against the publishing of Prophet Mohammad's caricature by several western dailies.
