Dark childhood
The report Crimes against children at record high (November 14), and the photograph with the caption ‘All work and no play’ aptly describe the status of children on Children’s Day. The statistics of crimes against children speak volumes for the neglect of 55 per cent of India’s population. Merely celebrating Children’s Day with hollow speeches is not going to help. If children are not made to shine, the slogan ‘India Shining’ will have no value.

Normally, people speak about child labour problems in five-star hotels and travelling in air-conditioned cars without trying to understand why children go to work. Politicians and NGOs should ensure that children are not exploited and improve the facilities for those children who have no choice but to work in
industries.

No red faces here
After the Nandigram episode, the face of the CPI(M) is now exposed. The outcry from poor farmers will not reach the Congress because the party is resting on the communists’ crutches. Over 25 years of communist misrule have injected hatred in the psyche of Bengal’s common man. I am surprised none of the UPA’s ally uttered a single word against the repressive stance of the communists.
