DDA official jailed for allowing illegal building

Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), New Delhi, laiys a trap and caught Narain red-handed.

A city court on Saturday sentenced a Delhi Development Authority official to four years' rigorous imprisonment for accepting bribe from a person to permit him to raise an unauthorised construction eight years ago.

Special Judge Sunil held Sat Narain Vasisht, a 'kanungo' (baildar) working in the DDA, Nazafgarh, guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from complainant Bhagat Singh.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on Narain.
According to the prosecution, on July 1, 1998, Narain while working as a public servant in DDA had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 from Bhagat Singh to permit him to raise the unauthorised construction and not to demolish it which were already made by Singh on his plot in Mohammad Pur in Ram Krishna Puram area in South Delhi.

Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), New Delhi, laid a trap and caught Narain red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from Bhagat Singh. The prosecution produced eleven witnesses to prove its case.

Narain was convicted under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
