A DEFENCE employee and his wife perished in a fire that broke out under mysterious circumstances at their Gomti Nagar residence in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Their two daughters were critically burnt. The cause of the fire was not known. But, police said the couple probably had a tiff in the night and one of them had pulled the gas pipe of the LPG cylinder, causing leakage. The leakage, in turn, caused a fire.
The Gomti Nagar police rushed to the Ujariaon residence of Moid Begh after receiving information from the control room around 3.10 am. Policemen found Begh (38), his wife Ruqaiya (34) and their daughters Saba (15) and Asma (13) lying critically burnt in a room of the house.
Police then rushed the injured to Nova Hospital from where they were referred to SPM (Civil) Hospital. After an hour, Ruqaiya, who had sustained 90 per cent burns, was declared dead. Her husband, too, succumbed to burns at the hospital. Asma and Saba were battling for life with 80 per cent burns.
A tenant on the ground floor of the same building spotted smoke billowing out from Moid’s room and raised an alarm. Locals then scaled the wall and found the room locked from inside. They doused the flames and informed the police.
Gomti Nagar circle officer Man Singh Chauhan said Moid, posted with the Army’s Principal Controller of Defence Accounts office at Fatehgarh, had arrived home two days ago. The gas pipe of the cylinder was completely burnt, but the cylinder did not explode. The cops were probing the cause of the fire.
Neighbours said Moid and his wife had engaged in a tiff late in the night and they had heard Ruqaiya screaming at her husband.
