Chandigarh Police confirmed that the "abduction" was done by officials of a Special Cell of Delhi Police who were tracking a notorious gangster of Haryana and Delhi, Manoj alias Lakhmi, who was living in Chandigarh pretending to be a student, Rajesh.

On Friday afternoon, a dozen men in plainclothes and carrying automatic weapons snatched the gangster and his friend Nitin Miglani, a first year student of DAV College in Chandigarh, in three private cars.

The Chandigarh Police, after initial investigation and eyewitness accounts, registered a case of kidnapping and abduction against unknown people.

But the official version from Delhi Police that they had picked up the duo without bothering to inform the Chandigarh Police has left both police forces embarrassed.

The Chandigarh Police is now planning to cancel the kidnapping and abduction complaint registered by them.

Police sources in Chandigarh said their Delhi counterparts had told them that they wanted only Rajesh for murders, extortion and other crimes and that Nitin had been picked up by mistake.

The family of Nitin, who is from Fazilka town in Punjab, over 250 km from Chandigarh, said they had no idea why their son had been taken away. His father, Mangat Ram, said they had no clue about his whereabouts.
