“The main concept of this festival is to show that if street vendors are regulated and are given proper places to run their business from, then they can give you delicious and hygienic food at very cheap rates,” says Arvind Singh, coordinator of National Association of Street Vendors of India, adding, “This festival will try to break the negative image of street vendors, who have been slowly fading away. It will also bring to fore the traditional cuisines that have been disappearing.”

Here, one can devour sumptuous veg and non-veg fare such as makki ki roti and sarson ka saag from Punjab, Hyderabadi biryani and litti chokha from Bihar. “This festival will ensure that Delhi gets a taste of street food from different states,” adds Singh.

The 27 stalls at the festival will bear testimony to the fact that cheap doesn’t necessarily mean unhygienic or unhealthy. “Mehenge jagah jaa kar burger aur pizza kyun khaayein agar yeh sab hum saste daam mein de sakte hai?” says Tirath Singh, a street food vendor from Ludhiana, who sells burgers, pizzas and sandwiches.
