‘We are watching you’ is set to become the Delhi Police’s unofficial slogan in the New Year. The police will install a battery of high-powered surveillance cameras across the city — in market places and on important intersections and road stretches. They also promise to make the word ‘cop’ come to mean community oriented policing.
Commissioner of Police KK Paul and a set of senior officers have been advocating an increased use of technology as a force multiplier.
At present, augmenting the police control room is a priority. “The phone density has skyrocketed in the city. The access to phone, mostly cell phones is much greater with the PCR receiving a very high number of phone calls,” said Paul.
The control room at the Police Headquarters receives over 7,000 calls daily, making it difficult for the 40 caller lines to cater to the increased traffic. A substantial increase in caller lines is afoot.
The fleet of PCR vans will increase from its present strength of 350 odd, thus improving the PCR’s response time in reaching an incident site. The police have received the government’s clearance to add another 200 vans. The fleet will be installed with GPS/GIS systems, which will help the control room to monitor the location of vans.
Cameras will be used to gauge traffic and law and order situations. High-resolution cameras have been installed atop Vikas Minar. These cameras will be fitted atop other buildings like Sagar Apartments, Tilak Marg and the Statesman building in Connaught Place. More cameras to nab motorists violating traffic rules and nab robbers and snatchers will be used.
The economic offences wing is to get a new computerised office. The online complaint redressal system will be expanded to cover the nine police districts. The senior citizen security cell will also be strengthened.
