In a revolutionary step towards women's empowerment, the Delhi government on Tuesday gave its nod to include the name of mothers in all official documents and certificates released by different departments.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting.
Officials said that henceforth, voters' identity cards, driving licenses, ration cards, school certificates, birth and death certificates and disability certificates would include the mother's name.
They said that particulars of both parents in the documents would help in establishing the identity of the person concerned in a more specific way.
The officials said the government has also decided to provide top priority to all women's empowerment schemes and programmes.
Senior officials said under the Stree Shakti programme, started by the government earlier, they would target 800,000 women in four selected areas of the capital.
They said the goal of the programme is to reduce neo-natal and infant mortality, maternal mortality as well as female foeticide.
The programme hopes to provide easy access to formal and non-formal education, completion of secondary and high school of all girls enrolled, better work conditions for women in the unorganised sector.
