Russian ninth seed Elena Dementieva booked her place in the French Open quarter-finals for the first time in her career with a 6-1, 6-3 win over fifth seeded American Lindsay Davenport on Sunday.
She will now face either French third seed Amelie Mauresmo or Magdalena Maleeva, the 21st seed from Bulgaria, for a place in the semi-finals.
Dementieva, whose best Grand Slam performance was a semi-final spot at the US Open in 2000, wrapped up a surprisingly easy victory after 59 minutes under heavy skies at Roland Garros.
The 22-year-old Dementieva hit 20 winners and 16 unforced errors and broke the normally solid Davenport serve six times while the American managed just seven winners and 28 errors.
Her defeat means that the French Open title remains the only Grand Slam crown the 27-year-old Davenport has yet to win.
