Dengue continues to kill, toll up to 56

Seven more people died of dengue, pushing up the toll to 56 in the country on Sunday. The vector-borne disease afflicted 87 more people, including an RJD leader, as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met patients at the AIIMS here and reviewed preparedness to cope with the disease.

Five people, including two children and an infant, died in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region and one person succumbed to the disease in Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh.

A 23-year-old man fell to the disease at AIIMS taking the death toll in Delhi to 22 since its outbreak. Himachal Pradesh reported its first case in Kangra district while 15 new cases of dengue were reported from Uttar Pradesh.

Thirty patients were under treatment in Kolkata, five in Vidarbha and Andhra Pradesh and an equal number of suspected cases in Madhya Pradesh.

Another 61 patients were admitted in various hospitals in the national capital where the outbreak has afflicted 886 people so far and claimed 21 lives.

The AIIMS screened 892 patients of which 28 turned out positive and 151 patients were being treated there. Bihar JD(U) chief Rajiv Ranjan alias Lallan Singh was flown in from Patna admitted to AIIMS late on Saturday night, health officials said.
