The deceased, identified as SM Gulechha, allegedly died due to an overdose of sleeping pills, the Mulund police said. No suicide note was left behind.

According to the police, Gulechha had been undergoing treatment for depression at a south Mumbai hospital.

"On Saturday morning, Gulechha went to his Smita Clinic at LBS Road," said assistant inspector K Waghmare, Mulund police station.

"However, when he did not return home at his regular time, his wife got worried. She called him on his mobile phone, but he did not answer. Around 10pm, she called the landline at the clinic, but again there was no response."

Worried, Guleccha's family went to the clinic around 11pm. "There they found the door locked. They broke the door and found the doctor lying unconscious on a chair. They rushed him to the Rajawadi hospital where he was declared dead on arrival," Waghmare said.

"We don't suspect any foul play. He was being treated for depression for the past few years and that may be the reason he took the extreme step," said Waghmare.

Senior inspector J Jadhav said an accidental death report had been registered at the Mulund police station.
