Satyaprakash Singh, 33, a patient of transplanted kidney jumped off the third-floor of the seven-storey hospital tower of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) on Saturday afternoon. His father, Ram Naresh Singh, 65, is left with one son and one-kidney (he donated the other to Satyaprakash two years ago). He has lean resources to run his family as he had spent all the money he got after his retirement as headmaster from a school in Andhra Pradesh for the treatment of his elder son.

Both kidneys of Satyaprakash, older of the two sons of Gorakhpur resident Ram Naresh Singh, failed and in 2004, a kidney transplant was performed on him at SGPGIMS. The operation entailed an expense of a few lakh rupees and further complications that come along with a kidney transplant. “Since the transplant, Satyaprakash had contracted a couple of infections—sometimes fungal, sometimes bacterial. This time it turned out to be viral—herpes and he was brought to SGPGIMS from their home in Indira Nagar, Gorakhpur on Wednesday,” said Abhijeet Singh, the brother of Satyaprakash.
Satyaprakash was admitted to the ‘Iso Room-5’ (Isolation room) of the Nephrology ward on the third floor of the hospital tower. Satyaprakash used to plunge into depression frequently due to his debilitating disease and because of the money that his family was having to pump in for his treatment. “I had gone out for a bath when he jumped off,” said Abhijeet.
“He asked me to go out and call Abhijeet. No sooner did I go out than he jumped out of the window,” said Satyaprakash’s mother crying hoarsely sitting on the floor of the ward.
“The moment Satyaprakash’s mother left, he got down from the bed in his isolation room. He pulled a stool near the window, opened it and jumped off. It looks like he was predetermined,” said a cop on duty on the spot.
People present around the spot heard a thud and rushed to the spot where Satyaprakash fell. He was badly injured. The staff rushed him to emergency and put him on ventilator, but he died soon after.
Satyaprakash used to work with a pharmaceutial company but could not continue when he was diagnosed with kidney failure. Ram Naresh exhausted his retirement money on the transplant. He gets less than Rs 6,000 as pension. Ram Naresh’s wife is a housewife and the younger son Abhijeet is a student.
Police sent the body for post mortem. Dr AK Bhatt, the Hospital Superintendent said: “Depression and psychological problems generally develop in transplant patients.”
