Police fired tear gas on Wednesday at dozens of protestors who attacked vehicles during a general strike in the Bangladeshi capital to demand the government's ouster, witnesses said.

The violence broke out in Dhaka's central Mahakhali district on the second day of a nationwide general strike called by an opposition alliance.

Police used tear gas after about 100 rampaging activists smashed several commuter vehicles for defying the strike, according to an agency reporter at the scene.
