As part of efforts to spruce up the capital ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, authorities will launch a major clean up of the Yamuna, including a complete overhaul of the city's sewerage system to ensure that no untreated effluents enter the river.

The main problem behind the pollution of Yamuna is the emptying of untreated effluents into the river, Delhi Jal Board CEO Arun Mathur said.

"We have therefore chalked out a plan involving a major overhauling of the city's sewer system which will ensure that no untreated sewage goes into the river," Mathur said.

One of the focus areas of this programme is the installation of systems to intercept sewage on the three major drains of Delhi - the Najafgarh, Shahdara and supplementary drains.

"These three drains carry over 75 per cent of the city's sewage," he said. By putting in place separate intercepting sewage treatment plants in front of these drains, a major part of the untreated effluents can be taken care of.
