According to a senior police official, Sivaprakasam, a former state government transport employee at Guindy, doused himself with kerosene and set himself ablaze.

He was immediately rushed to a government hospital where doctors said he had suffered 40 per cent burns.

The police official said Sivaprakasam was a former functionary in the local area unit of DMK.

So far, four persons, belonging to different parties, had committed suicides in the last one month expressing solidarity over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue starting with the self-immolation of K Muthukumaran in front of the Sastri Bhavan, housing central government offices in Chennai.
