Following the death of a 32-year-old woman during a diagnostic hystero-laparoscopy, her relatives allegedly assaulted the doctor and vandalised the maternity home in Thane on Wednesday.
Jyotsna Belose, a resident of Datta Kadam chawl near Cadbury junction, had been undergoing treatment at Maher Maternity Home in Vartaknagar for the past two months. Belose, a nurse, was admitted to the maternity home for her diagnostic hystero-laparoscopy at 8am.
“My wife was to be operated upon for a block in her uterus. She was taken to the operation theatre around 9.15am. At 10.40am, Dr Madhuri Sakhardande told us that she had passed away. They said that her pulse rate had dropped and her blood pressure had soared. But, my wife died due to the doctor’s negligence. They had not prepared for the surgery. The nurses kept coming out to get injections. I have filed a complaint against Dr Madhuri Sakhardande, Dr Ujjwal Mahajan and the anaesthetist,” said Arun Belose, the deceased’ husband.
There were also allegations that Belose died due to an overdose of anaesthesia.
Maher Maternity Home is run by gynaecologist Dr Sakhardande and Dr Mahajan, a gynaecologist who specialises in diagnostic hystero-laparoscopy. The anaesthesia was administered by Dr Nilima Kelkar.
Refuting the allegations, Mahajan said: “There was no negligence on my part. The entire procedure was recorded. The patient was administered general anaesthesia, a must for diagnostic hystero-laparoscopy. There was a block in her fallopian tube and we had almost removed the block when her pulse rate dropped. The cause for this is not yet known but it will be clear once we get the post-mortem report.”

{{/usCountry}}Dr Mahajan and the other doctors were brought to the Vartaknagar police station for questioning whereas Belose’s body has been sent for post-mortem at the Thane Civil Hospital.
An accidental death report has been registered. “We are waiting for the post-mortem report from the civil surgeon. If there is any mention of medical negligence, we will register a case against the doctors and arrest them,” said VB More, assistant commissioner of police, Vartaknagar division.
