Richa Srivastava, a 25-year-old designer, didn’t like the way she smiled due to her crooked teeth. But after she went for treatment, she can smile without any apprehension.

Dr Ekta Chadha, a dental surgeon in the Max Hospital, Gurgaon, said, “Until three years ago, I used to attend to only rich girls for smile design treatments, but now, even girls from middle-class families are conscious of their looks. This helps them in their jobs, especially in the service industry.”

Some go for perfect lip shape, while many visit dentists to fill gaps between teeth. There are different methods to get that ‘disarming smile’. These include bleaching, veneer, thinners and laser gum treatment.

Those who mostly visit dental clinics for cosmetic purposes are young girls. But some men too see dental specialists. “Most of the patients who visit my clinic are ready to spend a hefty sum for a good smile. Last week, I treated a man aged 30 years working in an MNC. He spent a whopping R40,000 to change the shape and colour of his teeth,” said Dr Harish Yadav, a dental practitioner in Sector 14.

Dr Chadha says the number of people who visit her for that perfect smile has grown manifold. “Three years ago, I barely got one or two queries a month. Now, around seven to 10 persons, on an average, come for the same.”

Dr Yadav says, “People should only visit prosthodontist and endodontist for cosmetic purposes and not any dental surgeon.”
