Delhi University colleges and their newly admitted students are putting final touches to their preparations with just a day to go before the academic session begins.
The first day is usually reserved for orientation sessions, which sensitise students to the college and its functioning. The students, however, tend to give the day a miss.
DU teachers stress the importance of orientation sessions, as they hold the key to several important guidelines and procedures that students may find useful in the next three years.
“The orientation sessions inform the students about the break-up of the attendance, lectures, tutorials and other academic requirements. The students are also introduced to the teachers in charge of various departments and the non-teaching staff who aid them. There are also departmental orientation sessions that are conducted the next day, which talk about what material they have to refer to and other subject-specific matter,” said Sanam Khanna, professor, Kamla Nehru College.
Students currently in DU also upheld the relevance of the orientation sessions, as they also provide opportunities to interact with teachers of respective departments along with senior students.
“The sessions provide important introductory insights into the functioning of the college and the various activities which students can take up along with academics. You get to meet some of your fellow incoming students and your seniors along with some faculty and key staff members. You will receive an overwhelming amount of information,” said Dhruv Khurana, a student of Sri Venkateswara College.

{{/usCountry}}At the same time, DU officials said students tended to be lax about the orientation sessions — which often got them into trouble later in the semester.
“Students tend to take the orientation sessions lightly. But they are actually windows to what the students will do through college. The sessions gives them an introduction to some of the procedures that need to be followed when they are a part of the college,” said a senior DU official.
