The DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu has alleged that the members of the women self help groups in the state were being pressurised by AIADMK to support the party.

In a joint memorandum, submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu, Mritunjay Saranghi, the alliance constituents - DMK, Congress, PMK, MDMK, CPI-M, CPI and Indian Union Muslim league - said the members of these groups were being compelled to attend the election meetings addressed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

The members were distributed free sarees in green colour with AIADMK's two leaves symbols printed on them, they alleged and asked CEO to direct the district collectors not to convene meetings of women SHGs till the elections were over.

They also charged the AIADMK leaders including its general secretary Jayalalithaa with resorting to smear campaign, violating the section 2 of the model code, which prohibited wild and unverified charges, criticism of all aspects of private life and use of abusive language.

T K S Elangovan and Viduthali Virumbi (DMK), G K Mani (PMK), Sabapathy Mohan (MDMK), S R Balasubramanian (Congress) G Ramakrishnan (CPI-M), S S Thiyagarajan (CPI) and K A Wahab (IUML) were signatories to the memorandum.
