The products have been varied — drunken drivers, rash drivers, careless drivers and underage drivers among others.
As have been their training schools.
In order to better the quality of drivers on state roads, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has decided to go down to every driving school in the state and inspect their infrastructure and trainers.
For the first time in the state, the RTO will be grading all driving schools in four different categories of A, B, C and D based on a list of criteria (see box). The RTO will also pay a monthly visit to the schools and train the staff to ensure quality training.
“If you have to cut down accidents, we need better trained people behind the wheel. And all these drivers come from various motor training schools in the state. That is the reason, we need to look at these schools and see what kind of training they give,” said Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Deepak Kapoor, adding that the policy would be implemented in two weeks.
“We are doing nothing new, but just implementing sections of the Central Motor Vehicles Act. It is always better to train people properly than ending up as a victim,” he added.
“New and swanky models of cars come in the market each day and not everyone knows how to drive them. Motor training schools offer simpler models of cars like Marutis and Santros to train people, who later drive BMWs and other high-end cars. These things matter when you are training a person,” said Kapoor.
