According to Pollution Control Board sources, over 250-million litre daily (MLD) untreated waste is being discharged in the Ganga everyday. Besides, over two dozens of unclaimed dead bodies were also being thrown in the river everyday making the river water unfit for drinking. But neither the district administration nor the KNN made any effort to check the menace till date. Some of the non-governmental organisations though tried to attract the attention of the district administration towards the seriousness of the pollution hazard, but to no avail.
According to medical experts, supply of highly-polluted water in the city was the chief cause of growing cases of various stomach diseases like twitching pain in the abdominal region, acute dysentery, diarrhoea and hyperacidity followed by high fever. The number of patients with water-borne abdominal disorders was on the peak these days, doctors said.
Talking to Hindustan Times, one of the senior official of the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) pleading anonymity said that on most of the time the pumping sets at the sewage treatment plant and at the common affluent treatment plant remain out of order and no efforts were made to repair themand to put them into operation.
He said during his recent inspection, he had brought the fact to the notice of the KNN and the district administration, but to no avail. In addition to it, the failure of Jal Sansthan in getting repaired the leaking water pipes in the different localities caused water loss to the tune of 90 crore litres each day. Against a demand of about 650 MLD water in the city the Sansthan could only supply 399 MLD water from its available resources.
