The Election Commission on Thursday allowed Amit Shah to resume his campaign in Uttar Pradesh after the BJP leader told the commission he would not use derogatory or abusive language.
Shah, the BJP’s UP in-charge and an aide of Narendra Modi, had accepted the EC’s censure with regard to his provocative speeches.
The poll panel had on Wednesday ruled that Shah had made statements that promoted “hatred and ill will” between religions and urged the police to press criminal charges.
Taking into account Shah’s promise not to do anything to disturb public tranquility and law and order, the commission decided to give him a second chance with the direction that his every public meeting be closely monitored and videographed.
The EC, however, has not taken any decision on lifting the campaign ban on Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. Both leaders were barred from campaigning by the EC last week.
