Leaders of various political parties met the visiting EC team led by Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi and the two Election Commissioners V S Sampath and H S Brahma today and complained against the two officials that they were partisan in their role.

Sources say the EC is likely to order their replacement shortly. The Election Commission earlier in the day ordered that all statues of chief minister Mayawati and her party symbol--the elephant--installed at several places in Uttar Pradesh be covered until the completion of Assembly poll process.

Justifying the action of covering all statues, a top EC official said the action was consistent with the Commission's action of removing portraits and calenders from government offices bearing photographs of the chief minister ahead of elections.
