Eight persons were killed in Chhattisgarh in rain related incidents in last 24-hours, as heavy downpour inundated several cities, prompting the administration to evacuate 10,000 people to safer areas.

In Raipur, which recorded rainfall of 29.7 cm since Friday, about 10,000 people were shifted to other places and in 14 schools the state government had opened shelters, as one-third of the city is grossly affected by the rains, officials said.

Several houses collapsed in the city today, sources said.

Three children were feared dead after being washed away in a rivulet on Saturday morning, sources said.

Similarly a couple and a woman were killed in Rajnandgaon district as lightning struck them, sources said, adding another woman was swept away in Mahasamund district due to heavy rainfall.

In Durg one woman was killed and 21 affected after consuming contaminated water in Dhaba village, they said.

Earlier, on June 20, five children and two women were killed due to lightning in Jashpur district headquarters where as three were seriously injured, police said.

The flight and train services were badly affected, while inter-state road traffic was disrupted at many places.

Two flights could not land in Raipur due to bad weather where as two more flights have been cancelled, Airport sources told PTI in Raipur.
