Eight of the 11 foreign teams have reached here for the World Cup, putting to rest all uncertainty over security issues. The teams that have checked in are Australia, Pakistan, South Africa, Canada, Argentina, the Netherlands, New Zealand and South Korea.
Germany, Spain and England are the only teams yet to reach Delhi. Spain, who were delayed by airline strike in Germany, changed their plans and are now coming to India via London. The team boarded the flight this morning and will be reaching India early on Wednesday morning. Germany are expected to reach late on Wednesday while England are scheduled to arrive on Thursday.
Security review
Meanwhile, the Co-ordination Commission for the World Cup met here on Tuesday to review the security arrangements. “The members were happy with the robust on-ground arrangements made by Delhi Police,” said Hockey India secretary general Narinder Batra in a release.
Matt Daly injured
Matt Daly’s misfortune a week before the event has solved England coach Jason Lee’s selection dilemma.
The 26-year-old forward suffered a grade-two hamstring tear during team’s camp in Doha, on Sunday. He will be unavailable for six to eight weeks, the England Hockey Board said in a release on Monday. With Daly out injured, Lee will not have to decide between James Tindall and Simon Mantell for the 18th and last place in the squad.
