Election is must to sustain democracy: Yunus

The Nobel laureate said the only way to sustain democratic process is election as other alternatives would be undesirable for the nation.

Nobel laureate Professor Mohammad Yunus has said that the only way to sustain democratic process is election as other alternatives would be undesirable for the nation.

"To sustain democracy, there is no alternative to election and for election we must reach an understanding," he said during a function at National Press Club here last evening.

Renewing his formula of a peace agreement for a coalition government, Professor Yunus said it might sound utopian, but that is one way to overcome the impending crisis. Others may come up with different formulas.

He said, "We've landed into a big crisis, the disaster is at our doors. Elections must be held to protect democracy."

Reminding the significant role of the media during a national crisis, Professor said like in the past the newspapers and media would have to pull out the nation from the disaster. "Problems are there, but we cannot throw away our nation."

The Nobel Laureate devoted much of his speech on negativism in the media and said the way newspapers project flaws and bad news, good and inspiring news do not get that much coverage.
