Close circuit television cameras are being installed at the Indian Institute of Technolgy, Kanpur, following threats from militant groups and many cases of theft in the hostels.
The institute would have electronic eyes to guard the campus by the end of March, said deputy director Kripa Shanker.
The decision to install the CCTVs had been taken following the fidayeen attack at the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore and the IIT receiving e-mail threats.
The six-member committee constituted to review the security aspects had strongly proposed procurement of hi-tech gadgets, including he CCTVs, as a part of security strengthening measure, said Shanker.
The cameras would be placed at strategic places so that movement of people from the institute and adjoining Nankari village could be closely monitored.
The people of Nankari have no other alternative route and use the institute thoroughfare, creating problems for the security personnel.
Another area of concern had been a number of burglaries in the hostels. A 24-year-old youth Mayank Kapoor was arrested barely two days ago loitering around the hall-III under suspicious circumstances.
Kapoor is said to have confessed to have stolen several laptops, mobile phones and other gadgets. Even in the past, burglars had made away with computers from the labs and laptops from the hostels.

{{/usCountry}}However, the deputy director denied that there was any apprehension about the security of researches of national importance. "We have a foolproof system in place", he said.
