THE INDEFINITE strike by the employees of two airports in the city continued on the second day on Thursday.
About 40 employees of the Chakeri and Civil airports went on an indefinite strike on Wednesday in protest against the modernisation of the Delhi and Mumbai airports.
President of the Airports’ Authority Employees’ Union (AAEU) RC Pandey condemned the lathi-charge on agitating employees of the Mumbai airport.
“The brutal lathi-charge on the employees of the Mumbai airport cannot be tolerated and the union is bracing for a prolonged battle with the government on the issue,” Pandey said.
Meanwhile, several trade union leaders of the city condemned the lathi-charge and extended support to striking employees of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Condemning the lathi-charge, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) accused the Congress-led Central Government of violating the common minimum programme (CMP).
In a meeting held here on Thursday, state vice-president of AITUC Arvind Raj Swaroop accused the government of deceiving the employees.
“After privatisation, jobs of the employees are no more secure,’ he said adding the Civil Aviation ministry has not given any assurance to the employees regarding it. A proposal was passed to launch a joint movement of all trade unions in support of the agitating AAI employees.
Meanwhile, the Kanpur Divisional Insurance Employees’ Association came out openly in support of the striking AAI employees and staged a demonstration at the LIC’s regional office.

{{/usCountry}}Condemning the lathi-charge, general secretary of the organisation Ashok Tewari also accused the government of deviating from the CMP.
“It’s just the beginning and gradually all public sector units will be privatised by the government,” Tewari said.
In another meeting, coordination committee of several trade unions condemned the lathi-charge. A resolution for launching a campaign in support of the agitating AAI employees was also passed in the meeting.
