The incident took place at Bhusan Power and Steel's boiling unit at Telkholi while the engineers entered a boiler to clean it while it was still hot.

Engineer Sunil Patel was burnt by the hot fly ash inside the boiler and had to be extricated, sources said.

Another engineer Saikat Chander, who entered the boiler after Patel, sustained severe burn injuries, they said, adding Boiler Operator Sibaram Pati, who was standing nearby, sustained minor burns.

The three were rushed to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) here, about 150 kms away, where Patel was declared dead, hospital sources said.

Chander, who hails from Nagpur, suffered 90 per cent burn injuries and was stated to be critical.

Pati said he had warned the engineers not to enter the boiler as it was still hot.
