The Jammu and Kashmir government will cancel the registration of students who had gained admission to the MBBS course through illegal means.
Announcing this, minister for medical education Taj Mohi-ud-Din on Tuesday asked the crime branch to speed up its probe into the multi-million scam wherein question papers were leaked and some students sat for the entrance examination in a hotel, and come out with a list of students who got admission after purchasing the leaked Common Entrance Test (CET) question papers.
"As soon as the crime branch comes out with the list of students who secured admissions through CET examinations by paying bribes, their recognition would be cancelled then and there," Taj said.
The minister appealed to the striking students of government medical colleges in Jammu and Srinagar to maintain calm and cooperate with the government, and let the investigating agency come out with the truth.
The crime branch began a probe into the case last month after a complaint alleged that 12 candidates had qualified the CET-2012 examination by purchasing question papers from a syndicate that included officials close to the then Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) chairman.
Former BOPEE chairman Mushtaq Ahmed Peer was arrested by the crime branch after raids found incriminating evidence from his residences in Srinagar and Jammu.
Crime branch officials also arrested one Sajad Ahmad Sofi, who had acted as an agent in the racket.
During the probe, crime branch officials found that a special examination centre was set up in a hotel near Dal Lake for those candidates who had paid as much as Rs 20 lakh for ensuring admission.
