"It is not only general patients, but medicos also need a lot of counselling. They work under tremendous pressure. It is an irony that despite rising cases of psychological disorders, people still hesitate to seek the help of psychologist," said Dr Meenu Sagar Superintendent-in-Charge of Dufferin Women's Hospital.
She was speaking at the inaugural function of psychiatry ward at Moti Lal Nehru District (Colvin) Hospital, on Sunday.
Dr Sagar said the records show that the highest number of people who committed suicide in the last few years, were in the nursing profession. "This indicates that medical professionals are living in a lot of stress due to gruelling working hours and pressure to cope with the demand of patients and seniors," she added.
Consultant psychologist Dr Saurabh Tandon said the psychological disorder patients were very shabbily treated by the society. They face social boycott, which affects their interpersonal relationship. Their productivity also decreases and gradually they become burden on the society.
"The need is to remove certain myths from the society about the psychological disorders. Any person can suffer from depression, anxiety and sudden mood swings. They should not hesitate in taking the help of psychologists," he added.
Dr Tandon said maximum number of suicides were conducted by patients with psychological disorders. Sometimes a patient behaves in a normal manner, but he may suffer from delusions or any other psychological problems, which need to be identified and treated.
"The most common manifestation of psychological disorders are headache, restlessness, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, mood swings, lack of appetite, pseudo seizures and memory loss. These symptoms could be physical or psychological. The psychologist needs to differentiate between them and provide proper treatment," he added.
Chief Medical Superintendent of Colvin Hospital Dr SJ Singh informed about the features of psychology department. "Initially OPD services will be provided to the patients. Later, it will be expanded into indoor admission facility," he added. A large number of medical officers, interns, nursing staff and pharmacists attended the programme.
