Janata Party President Subramanium Swamy on Tuesday approached the Delhi High Court seeking direction to the Election Commission for incorporation of ballot papers in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) to avoid tampering at the time of poll.
Filing a PIL, the Janata Party President challenged EVM in its present form and said "do not utilise any EVM unless the same is incorporated with a paper trail".
The PIL, which is listed before the Division Bench of Chief Justice AP Shah and Justice Manmohan on Wednesday, said utilization of EVM with paper back-up has been successful in the USA and several European countries.
Alleging that in the past several elections, the Election Commission's claim that EVMs were tamper-proof has been proved wrong, the former MP has said EC's refusal to entertain his request for the dual system forced him to approach the court for its intervention in the matter.
He wanted the Commission to adopt international standards for successful utilization of EVM at the time of polls.
The senior politician suggested that in case of any complaint of tampering in any polling booth, the Commission should go for a second round of counting with the ballots.
