"We envisage the proposed university as oriented to meeting the needs of the overseas Indian community in the most sought-after disciplines, including engineering and management," the prime minister said at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

"Our aspiration would be to impart quality education at par with the best universities in the world. The challenge now is to create the requisite enabling framework that will adequately meet these aspirations," he said at India's annual convention to connect with its Diaspora.

"We hope to do this in the coming months."

According to the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, the strength of the Indian Diaspora is around 25 million spread over 130 countries.

Many of them want to send their children to India for higher studies but find admission in Indian universities extremely difficult.
