Suspected militants exploded a powerful grenade in a public hall in Imphal East district when supporters of Manipur Agriculture Minister Ph Parijat were holding a meeting in connection with the forthcoming assembly polls.
No one was hurt. Official sources said on Wednesday that unknown militants set off the explosive inside the Irawat Memorail Hall at Pungdombam, about 15 km from Imphal, last evening damaging the dais of the hall.
Parijat, a senior CPI leader, who is contesting from Lamlai Assembly constituency in Imphal East district, was not present at the time of the explosion.
Reports said that about six militants, belonging to a particular organisation, entered the hall and asked the people, mostly workers of the CPI, to get out of the hall immediately before exploding the grenade inside the hall.
A senior police official said they would investigate whether the incident was connected with monetary demand from the minister by some militants.
